Purpose of the research
Weight management is an important factor in cancer treatment, recovery, and overall health, so it’s important that support is available for everyone.
Research doesn’t typically engage women from underserved communities. Therefore, FORALL wants to engage South Asian women in research, to consider how weight management support can be inclusive.
We have 3 opportunities available to get involved with FORALL: (1) take part in an interview or group discussion; (2) be part of our community advisory group; and (3) become a peer researcher. All opportunities will be reimbursed. Please get in touch for further details.
Interview/Group discussion
We are looking for women who:
- are aged 18 or over
- are South Asian, Black African or Black Caribbean, or live on a low income
- have a lived experience of breast cancer (diagnosed in the last 5 years)
- completed surgery, and if applicable chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy
- who have experience with or interest in weight management
In the interview or group discussion (it is up to you which you would prefer), you will spend approximately 60 minutes talking to a researcher about your experiences of weight management and lifestyle since a breast cancer diagnosis/treatment.
This can be on the phone, on a video call (e.g. on Microsoft Teams or Zoom) or face-to-face at a place and time convenient for you.
Community advisory group
We are looking for women who:
- are aged 18 or over
- are South Asian, Black African or Black Caribbean, or live on a low income
- have a lived experience of breast cancer (diagnosed in the last 5 years)
As part of the community advisory group, you will talk about your experiences and give advice to the FORALL researchers on how they can make the research more inclusive. You will be asked to take part in meetings with other group members and to give feedback on research materials.
Peer researcher
We are looking for women who:
- are aged 18 or over
- are South Asian, Black African or Black Caribbean, or live on a low income
Women may also:
- speak an additional language(s)
- have a previous diagnosis of breast cancer, or have a family member or close friend with a previous diagnosis of breast cancer
As a peer researcher, you will work alongside FORALL researchers to support or lead interviews or group discussions with underserved women. You may support the research team to look at the interview findings and explore and agree on key themes coming out of the interviews. You may work with the research team to consider the best ways to communicate and share these findings to the public and relevant communities. You will also work with the research team to share research opportunities with communities and consider ways to engage underserved communities in FORALL. This may include sharing recruitment materials with people you know and attending meeting with community organisations.
